Cheonggyecheon (청계천) is a 10.9 km long man made stream that cuts through the centre of Seoul.
It adds much needed respite and greenery to the fast paced, polluted streets that surround it. It’s essentially an oasis in the centre of the one of the most densely populated and polluted cities in the world.
The stream flows with lush greenery on either side and traipses its way along curved man made cement banks and stepping stones creating human crossings along certain points.
The stream replaced a busy road and initially was criticised but since its completion in 2005 has become an extremely popular and iconic part of the urban landscape of Seoul. It was a factor in the mayor who initiated its constructions elevation to president of the country, which shows the appreciation that is held for it.
It is a place of tranquility and also provides a place for exercise and a secluded lunch spot to escape the pressures of city life.
