Architectural Wonder: Louvre it or leave it

The pyramids and their symbolism are eternally fascinating. Their distinct attempt to break away from nature and portray something bigger about humanity. The afterlife. The ascent to the unknown.

The Louvre evokes the same feelings. It is architecture that is made to withstand time. I. M Pei was looking to create something lasting, with feeling. I’ve walked past it a couple of times, but today I went inside.

Inside the pyramid constructed of glass and steel, the real surprise – like the pyramids- lies below ground. It is hard to describe the vast space that occupies the chasm below the pyramid. The tunnels leading to exhibition space, the stunning natural light, the spiral staircase. It’s bloody breathtaking.

The above ground central pyramid is surrounded by three smaller pyramids that also provide pockets of sunlight to the internal space.

The marble floor, the limestone and the excitement of finding such a beautiful space below ground epitomises the reason architects build- to create spaces that surprise and invigorate.

The inverted glass and steel pyramid that mirrors the above ground structure is trying to tell a story. The story is that you should never take a building at face value. The real punching-weight of this building is below belt (ground). You also don’t need to queue and pay to see the Mona Lisa. The beauty is already around you. Just get down. Get down on it.
